Chu-e was out and about!

Not far, not really. But the changing weather had made him wistful to stop sulking in his home. Without Eris Halla around it made him feel empty. Yet the bright sunlight (and perhaps some bullying from Prince) had coaxed him outside.

Chu-e was permitted to go very far without reason or escort. Yet the League didn't send anyone out to check up on him as long as he stayed close to his house. Thankfully there was a grocery store just around the corner and a few little shops a little past that.

Today Chu-e was sitting outside a little cafe. It was quiet this time of the day; only a few people on the street. No one paid him much mind. It was nice.

A slice of carrot cake sat in front of him, half eaten, a glass of blueberry lemonade sitting to the side.

Eyes closed, Chu-e wasn't doing anything. Just enjoying the breeze.

[attr="class","star2"] being within the league's influence made him uncomfortable, but especially being within the walls of evergrande city. he missed the safety of sootopolis; the comfort that a rocket-owned city brought him.

[break][break] but sometimes there were things that must be done, even if he didn't want them to be.

[break][break] with the help of illeana reyes, wyndon had lately gotten new contacts who's offices lay in evergrande. he couldn't deny that it would be useful if they could open a branch in this city, though he doubted that would be for quite some time. but still, the board required his attendance and so jayden - or "michail volkov" would come. at the very least, he could take the opportunity to have brunch with his childhood friend, the league's head scientist, and maybe even potentially see if he could convince her to come home.

[break][break] he walks outside of the cafe and prepares himself to exit the city's boundary when he pauses.

Chu-e's eyes crack open at his name, his real one, being spoken. He's still not used to that when out in public.

A tilted head, face blank, is all jayden cross will find in answer for a few moments. Chu-e had never seen him in his cute little 'Volkov' getup before. But the shape of Jayden's face. The color of his eyes.

Slowly, his hand motions to the plain white chair across from him. Aged and sunbleached.

"Jayden."

A brow is raised. A breeze blows and ruffles his long hair.

The ball in Jayden's court.

[break][break] 'i'm sorry,' he can imagine himself saying. 'you must be mistaken. i'm not jayden. not anymore. not to you.'

[break][break] instead, he finds his legs walking sluggishly towards the source of the sound. sliding numbly into the bleached-color chair.

"Yeah." He half motions to the cake, the lemonade, unfinished in front of him. Chu-e turns to face jayden cross better. Lean his elbow on the table and rest his cheek on his fist. Just observing the other.

"You look different than the last time I saw you." But he doesn't say if Jayden looks better or worse. Just different.

"Miss me?" It's a small tease. Light. Yet there is still a tension between them. Taunt and ready to snap.

"Micro-chipped." Is all Chu-e answers to that question.

The silence follows and he glances away. A deep sigh.

"I'm a bomb waiting to go off, Jay. You want me to go off at home or here?"

Chu-e circles his finger around the rim of his glass. A crystal claw forms, scraping the sides.

The hand retreats and Chu-e stares at jayden cross fully. His eyes are traps for the other. Unwavering.

"I think I was in love with you, once." Is admitted. Chu-e does not shy away from this truth. "You loved me too, didn't you?" It's not an accusation. Chu-e talks like he already knows the answer.

You can't run from me, Jayden his eyes say to the other. You could never run from me.

[break][break] goosebumps raise along his skin; it's not as if he hasn't seen it before. wasn't as if he didn't already know. but the reminder that Chu-e Choi's body was not his own was —

[break][break] immediately, jayden freezes. a combination of shock, confusion and finally dread fills his veins — what? Chu-e Choi had loved him? no. that wasn't true. no. that couldn't be true. no. he -

[break][break] "you're lying," he says, lips twisted into a frown. this wasn't the Chu-e Choi that he'd fallen in love with, underneath a starlit sky, wasn't the Chu-e Choi that he'd been willing to risk his life for. not the one who was gentle and kind. the way that Chu-e Choi looked at him now was like a predator closing in on it's prey.

If jayden cross has never seen the predator lurking under Chu-e's skin, it was only because love had blinded him. Chu-e had always been a lion laying in wait.

"I did." It's firm. Chu-e will broker no argument about his own feelings. Would not dare have someone say he was lying for them.

His features soften.

"You don't love me anymore, do you?"

At this Chu-e seems a bit mournful. Chu-e had never been anyone's first choice. No one except possibly Jayden's. And then he had managed to fuck that up with his own ineptitude at love. At handling his own feelings. It was destructive and cruel to them both.

"I'm sorry I hurt you."

Chu-e shakes his head.

"He's gone."

Chu-e didn't know where or when or why. It hurt too much to think about.

"I thought you deserved to know."

What Chu-e didn't say was that, selfishly, he had hoped jayden cross had still carried some sort of flame for him.

Chu-e was so lonely.

But whatever healing that the other had found, Chu-e wouldn't pick at his wounds any longer.

He just picked up his lemonade and took another sip.

[break][break] jayden couldn't help it. that was his first reaction. he'd had too many people in his life leave him for worse reasons. Death seemed like the easier alternative.

[break][break] but as shocking as that news might have been, what Chu-e Choi had told him mere moments ago was even more shocking. his throat closed as he stood in that metal chair, across from his first love, forced to think about what all this meant as he watched him suck up sickly sweet liquid in a plastic straw.

[break][break] "come home," he says instead, plaintively, hyper-aware of their surroundings. he wishes they weren't here. that they were somewhere private, where he could ask more questions.

A shake of the head.

"I'm useless there, Jayden." That was the sobering truth, wasn't it?

"Even if it wasn't for Necrozma, I... I'm crumbling away. What use is an old dog who lost all it's teeth? That's all I am now."

Standing beside people who still mattered, who still could do, people like jayden cross- Chu-e had started to feel it. Their own dwindling abilities. They couldn't move mountains anymore. They just...

"I'm... I'm just really tired, Jayden. Please..." Chu-e looks up to meet Jayden's eyes. Their eyes are wet but they're not crying. "I just want to die in peace."

[break][break] jayden had heard about it. the effect that necrozma had on the ex-underboss back when he'd been in rocket, before his untimely death. he'd heard about how it had twisted him into something that was awful and small, preying on the weaknesses that already existed there. in fact, jayden had seen it for himself even after Chu-e Choi had been restored back to life — and he was seeing it now, across the table, close enough to touch.

[break][break] it reminded him of all too much of the otome route he'd played for Eris Halla.

[break][break] their eyes locked - jaded violet and charcoal blue. maybe once upon a time, the look would've tugged deeper at his heartstrings, would've drawn him beneath the waves.
